HENSOLDT introduces OrbitISR as modular SAR solution for satellite-based reconnaissance
The sensor system house HENSOLDT presents the modular SAR solution for satellite-based reconnaissance OrbitISR that combines high-performance imaging with a high degree of integration flexibility. The SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) electronics kit combines high-resolution, all-weather, day-and-night operation with an architecture that provides system integrators with increased certainty during development, integration, and subsequent upgrades.
OrbitISR supports precise situational awareness through various SAR modes and configurable observation parameters. This makes the system suitable for diverse mission profiles and demanding operational conditions where reliable data and robust target characterization are critical.
At the same time, OrbitISR reduces the complexity of system integration. The modular, open architecture facilitates integration into various satellite platforms and payload configurations, lowers development costs, and reduces program risks. Open interfaces support the integration of third-party components and avoid dependencies on proprietary system environments.
“OrbitISR combines powerful SAR technologies with an architecture designed for future mission requirements,” says Marion Koch, Head of Airborne & Space Radars Business Unit at HENSOLDT. “This provides integrators with a solution that brings together operational performance, planning certainty, and technological sovereignty.”
OrbitISR is based on proven HENSOLDT technology and has been further developed for use in space. With more than 25 years of experience in the SAR field and significant contributions to TerraSAR-X, TanDEM-X, and SARah, HENSOLDT is making a valuable contribution to strengthening sovereign European ISR capabilities in space.

Our company
HENSOLDT is a leading European high-tech company in the defence and security industry, based in Taufkirchen near Munich. The company develops sensor solutions, electronics and software for the air, land, sea, cyber and space domain, helping armed forces worldwide to detect threats early and make informed operational decisions.
Building on decades of experience in mission-critical sensor technology, HENSOLDT combines radar, optronics, electronics and cyber expertise with data-driven software and artificial intelligence. The aim is to integrate and analyse sensor data from different platforms and domains and merge it into a reliable situational picture.
HENSOLDT has thus evolved from a traditional sensor supplier to a new-generation system integrator – a ‘neo-system house’ that enables networked, Software-Defined Defence capabilities and supports information superiority in missions.
In the 2025 financial year, HENSOLDT achieved a turnover of €2.46 billion with around 9,500 employees. The company is listed on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange in the MDAX.
