TwinSens

Combining passive and active radars
TwinSens

The challenge

As recent conflicts have shown, drones can be used to locate, target and destroy key assets with devastating effects. One issue that the increased use of drones presents is that the high level of power transmission involved in ground-based air defences render these capabilities vulnerable to detection and attack by loitering munitions.

This situation calls for an innovative protection solution combining the best features of both passive and active radars.

Commanders and personnel need to be able to operate these passive and active radar systems in multiple settings, including ground-based air defence, air surveillance, coastal surveillance and border security.

TwinSens

Our solution

To enable end users to secure their territory against attacks from hostile missiles and aircraft – manned or unmanned – HENSOLDT has combined its TRML-4D air defence system with its world-leading Twinvis system. This combines active radar for surveillance, target acquisition and weapon assignment with passive radar that uses electromagnetic signals from broadcast and TV transmitters and evaluates their echoes when reflected by an object.

Together they are TwinSens, a powerful solution that creates formidable synergies and decisive benefits for the operators, whether in a surveillance or a target-acquisition scenario.

The silent surveillance and cueing of the HENSOLDT TwinSens mean minimum emissions and response times.
TwinSens rejects false targets and delivers unrivalled jammer suppression.

TwinSens

Features and benefits

Features

  • Compact, 20-ft. ISO container design for roll-on/roll-off transport
  • Self-contained
  • For set-up and decamping within 15 min
  • Instrumented range of 250 km
  • Track accuracy: Azimuth: <0.2°, elevation: < 0.3°, range: <15 m
  • Dual-band surveillance: NATO G-band (active radar); FM, DVB-T, DAB (passive radar)
  • RF on/off switching time of 1 s
  • Look-forward/look-back capability, for fast track confirmation and increased rate of track update

Benefits

  • Combines two HENSOLDT systems
  • Sensor-data exchange between the two systems and shared control enhance the performance of the overall solution versus stand-alone sensors.
  • TwinSens gives customers an air picture initially created without RF transmissions and hence free from risk that enemy forces will detect GBAD systems.
  • Enhanced resistance to modern jammers and improved situational awareness, even for targets with an extremely small RCS.
